How do they steal personal information?
Keep your Smartphone or Computer Safe
Be safe when online as hackers use a variety of methods to steal personal data from individuals, businesses, hacking their computers and smartphones with security flaws.
Some of the most common hacking techniques and scamming tactics can be avoided. Here are some methods hackers will use:
Unsecured websites: When you open a website, they can intercept data exchanged on websites without HTTPS encryption, making personal information vulnerable, so be careful when viewing and only use secure websites.
Phishing: sending fraudulent emails or messages that trick victims into providing sensitive information. Make sure you block these and move to spam.
Malware: installing malicious software, such as keyloggers or spyware, onto victims’ devices to capture data. Take care when downloading software to your device.
Weak passwords: using tools like brute-force attacks to guess weak or reused passwords. Always use strong passwords, and limit the use of simple repeatable passwords.
Data breaches: infiltrating company databases to steal large volumes of personal information.
Social engineering: manipulating victims into revealing personal information by posing as trustworthy entities.
Unsecured public Wi-Fi: intercepting data transmitted over Public Wi-Fi networks between the user and the server. Do not log in with your secure password details, such as banking, on Public Wifi.
Fake apps: creating malicious apps that mimic legitimate programmes, but instead access and steal data from users’ devices. Be safe online, it’s a minefield, with Apps appearing to be genuine and requesting login information.
